Are New Homes Getting Smaller?

Let's look at the percent distribution of new homes in the 3000 to 3999 sq ft range, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and see what we can learn about the size of today's new homes.

  • In 1999, only 12% of new homes were in the 3000 to 3999 sq ft range.
  • The number of homes in this size range increased in 2000 and 2001, then stayed steady until 2005.
  • 2007 saw the highest percentage of homes in the 3000 to 3999 sq ft range.
  • The percentage of homes built in this size range INCREASED in 2010 vs 2009, and was higher in 2010 than in 7 of the 11 previous years.

In conclusion, it doesn't look like we're going to see a big downturn in the number of homes built in the 3000 to 3999 sq ft range.   Demand appears to be stronger in 2010 than in most of the previous decade.
