Raleigh Floor Plans | How to Add a Mudroom
"Home Hub" Storage Room
The Carwiles came to Stanton Homes with a traditional-style floor plan and a few questions.
And with some modern thinking, we made savvy improvements on the livability of their floorplan.
With an entertaining style of casual elegance rather than formal, the Carwiles were willing to eliminate their formal dining area in order to put that space to better use.
The small laundry room behind the kitchen was moved into the dining room space. The laundry room space became an ample walk-in pantry with exterior window.
The new laundry was customized to become more than just a mudroom - it was designed to be an entire "Home Hub" - a space for "life" to occur.
We started by wrapping the room with cabinets and built-in countertops. The tall cabinets were designed to house large cleaning tools and supplies. The upper cabinets were designed to house wrapping paper, light bulbs, pet supplies and a first aid kit.
A sink base cabinet with faucet and sprayer was added for cleaning out pet dishes, re-filling water dishes and pre-treating clothes with stains. Areas below the countertops were left open for pet feeding dishes and large baskets for outside plastic toys and outdoor gear.
Above the sink, an open area was fitted with a rod for hanging hand-laundered garments and delicates. A security system panel and large bulletin board (for children's artwork) are conveniently located to the left as you enter the room.
The countertop backsplash areas were fitted with extra outlets at desk height - perfect for phone and camera charging stations.
The Carwiles also plan to add adhesive-backed 12 x 12 cork tiles (coordinated to match the cork plank flooring) to the backsplash area for calendars and appointments.
This forward-thinking design of "green" cork flooring is loved for its exotic earthy looks, resilience (moisture friendly) and hypo-allergenic qualities. Cork is an ideal choice for a 21st century home hub.
The color scheme and casual style of the Carwile home hub will lend itself well to future needs. Yes, we thought of everything in this "life friendly" room - even finger painting can happen in this 100% washable, kid-friendly design.
