Pairing Oil Rubbed Bronze with Stainless Steel

Learn How to Mix Metal Finishes Throughout Your New Home

Stainless Steel Appliances | New Home Kitchen DesignDeciding on the types (and variety) of metal finishes to incorporate into your home can be tough - with hundreds of design options ranging from oil rubbed bronze to chrome to stainless steel.

If you're having trouble choosing just one style, you're not alone!

We were recently asked this common interior design question through "Ask Andrea":

Is it okay to have oiled bronze faucets and stainless steel appliances in the same room?

And here's what Stanton Homes' on staff interior design expert Andrea has to say:

"Yes! It is certainly okay to have oil rubbed bronze faucets and stainless steel appliances together.

That question seems to come up at least once a day in the world of residential design and construction. I haven't met another designer yet who would disagree with me.  In fact I think the fear of mixing more than one metal finish in a room is virtually unfounded professionally.

Once you have been bold enough to mix more than one metal finish in a room, you will see that a thoughtful combination looks better, as the variation  brings more interest to the room.

In fact, design professionals often brag when successfully mixing finishes! The artful mix of more than one finish is a skill. Nonetheless I maintain that it really isn't that difficult to achieve as long as you keep a little balance in mind.

Stainless Steel Appliances in the Kitchen:

Since you mentioned stainless steel appliances let's talk about the kitchen and the opportunities available in this room alone, to create an artful mix of finishes with oil rubbed Bronze and stainless steel.

- You have bronze cabinet hardware to pick up the oil rubbed bronze from the faucet.

- The faucet most often installed in granite is an undermounted sink in stainless steel.

- Overhead you have light fixtures. Light fixtures come in so many different finishes now that unless you want everything dictated to you by one lighting company, you are going to end up with more than one finish for lighting. Stainless Steel Appliances | New Home Kitchen Design

With an oil rubbed bronze faucet and bronze cabinet hardware, I would still feel that the stainless steel had a strong enough presence in the room, and I would go with some oil rubbed bronze on the light fixtures.

In popular transitional floorplans that people are opting to build, you can often view wrought iron railings from somewhere in the kitchen - the presence of yet another finish. This is where you have to relax and use your judgement.

Yes, most often the oil rubbed bronze tends to blend in with the wrought iron in the distance.  Furthermore door hinges and hardware present another opportunity or decision to tie in a finish.

What's a good general rule to follow when choosing finish types?

The accepted "rule" here seems to be that whatever finish you go with for door hardware and hinges throughout the house, you would consider that color to be your BASE metal finish.

From there, if something is functioning purely for utility rather than decoration, then its finish should follow that of the door hardware.

When it comes to decorative items such as foyer fixtures, dining fixtures, and kitchen faucets, then we are commonly seeing a second metal finish being used as an accent finish.

With a little thought, some planning and attention to detail, mixing two beautiful finishes can and often does work out very well."
