The Ultimate Cheat Sheet On Home Paint Colors

Posted by Penny Hull on Fri, Apr 11, 2014 @ 08:04 AM

Choosing Paint Colors for your Home

Your checklist for choosing a main wall color

Our "ultimate cheat sheet" will help you choose the interior paint colors for your home. From main wall color tips to accent color recommendations, you'll find great ideas on how to choose paint colors for your home, below.

1. Start simple.

Many colors look perfect in designer photos - especially when rooms are decorated to match.

But be careful that you are not attracted to a color just because it is trending on Pinterest and Houzz.

When choosing a main wall color, make sure you personally like it.

2. Don't be too literal. Picking a color you like is NOT the same thing as choosing your favorite color - which could mean bubblegum pink or lime green - which would be too much of a good thing.

Keep in mind, everyone must live with your main wall color.

Save bold colors and designs for areas like powder rooms and kids' bedrooms and bathrooms.

3. What do you love to wear? Your color choice should mimic the pair of pants or jacket you wear most often. You often choose to wear the same piece of clothing over and over because it goes with so many things and YOU LOOK GOOD IN IT - that is the key. If you are surrounded by a color that is flattering, then you will naturally enjoy it more and feel comfortable at home in it.

4. Find flexibility. Your main wall color should be flexible enough that it can go with - and enhance - many other colors.

5. Greys and khakis.

Often, you see homes built in shades of greys and khakis.

Greys and khakis offer a huge range of shades, where you can find the option that suits you best.

As color trends fade in and out, you will tend to see a dominance of either grey or khaki in homes.

6. Bold accents. You'll have much more flexibility when picking accent colors.

But remember, experts recommend that you choose a dining room color that most flatters the gracious host or hostess!

That's pretty fair - you want to look good in your own dining room after you spent hours and hours preparing a feast for all to enjoy.

7. Buy fabric. Professional designers use this interior color tip: find a fabric design you love, even if you don't know what you want to do with it. Buy a yard of it to carry around with you.

At the store, you will find a key of circles - these show all of the colors used in that fabric. You can use that color key to put an entire house together, by eliminating the guess work and guaranteeing a perfectly coordinated palette.

Remember, the fabric you chose was created professionally, so you can feel secure in even your more adventurous choices such as deciding to pull out that pale salmon color to use as an accent on your powder room ceiling.
