Window Designs and Photos of 22 Walls of Windows Trending for 2019

Walls of Windows are the #2 Top Request for Custom Homes in NC

Here are 22 Walls of Windows trending for 2019 in the Raleigh region.

Massive walls of windows that let in natural light are one of the top reasons homebuyers choose to build a custom home. Production homes and existing homes that were not built recently typically have only a fraction of the window coverage of a custom home. Take a look at these 23 approaches to adding extra windows throughout your new home:

#3 Wall of Windows - Country Estate

HorseCountryEstateExteriorRearwallofwindows

#4 Wall of Windows - Main Living Areas

LakeHouseKitchenwallofwindows

This is another great example of wrapping the Great Room and Breakfast Room in walls of windows within view of the Kitchen. The natural light that streams in through all this glass makes all of the main floor gathering areas brighter.

#5 Wall of Windows - Master Suite Retreat

RemingtonMasterwallofwindows

This Master Suite Retreat takes advantage of the views, with walls of windows across the Bedroom Suite and Sitting Room. The wall color has a natural tone, following the theme of reflecting nature. Hardwoods are solid oak flooring.

#6 Wall of Windows - Castle rotunda

AvonstoneManorwallofwindows

This all-brick custom home has a wall of windows across the tower rotunda in the back. As you can see in this photo, there are a lot of other big windows that further expand the classic elegance of this estate home.

#7 Wall of Windows - Library

BarcelonaDualMasterLibrarywallofwindows

These bookcases are built within a wall of windows, so that this Library can be filled with light and wonder. What a great way to enjoy a good book - with wide open views on all sides.

#8 Wall of Windows - To the Rooftop

SmokeyRidgeDeck-1

These Walls of Windows take advantage of spectacular views. The Great Room is filled to the ceiling with windows, which keeps on going across the entire back of the home with more picture windows and glass doors. Natural light, and all the sights.

#9 Wall of Windows - Transoms

BlueridgeBreakfastwallofwindows

The transoms tucked over the top of windows in the Great Room provide a wall of windows up to the 9 foot ceiling. More glass windows and a door to the Screen Porch extend the sunshine.

#10 Wall of Windows - One Room to the Next

BrysonGreatRoomwallofwindows

The Wall of Windows in this Great Room rise to the 11 foot ceiling with transoms. Adjacent, the wall of windows in the Breakfast Room rise to a 9 foot ceiling. Stonework denotes a formal area. Changing shades of paint provide room definition.

#11 Wall of Windows - Double Sliding Glass Doors

CabotGreatRoomwallofwindows

These double sliding glass doors take the place of windows, with a welcoming transition for indoor/outdoor living. The overall effect is like a Wall of Windows, with increased natural light as well as easy access.

#12 Wall of Windows - Sun Room

SunnysideFarmhouseSunRoomwallofwindows

What could be more fitting for a Wall of Windows than a Sun Room? Soak it up, with windows all the way around the entire room, including glass French Doors leading into the Sun Room from the Great Room. Top it off with these sunny yellow walls!

#13 Wall of Windows - Two Stories and a Curve

CotswoldGreatRoomCwallofwindows

This curved Wall of Windows is stunning. Subtle rounding of the wall adds elegance. The massive amount of glass bathes all the main gathering areas of the home with natural light. Sculpted columns nearby are exclamation points for this work of art.

#14 Wall of Windows - on an Accent Wall

CynthiaRidgewallofwindows

This simple approach to a Wall of Windows with transoms over the top of picture windows is enhanced with the ribbon of color in its accent wall, which draws the eye around the corner as the sky blue wall wraps around more big windows.

#15 Wall of Windows - Estate Home

GrandLodgeExteriorBackwallofwindows

This custom estate home has so many walls of windows it required commercial framing. The intent was views from every portion of the home, and an endless array of natural lighting. All goals are a success.

#16 Wall of Windows - Subtle Curve with Big Impact

DahlbergGreatRoomwallofwindows

The subtle curve in this Wall of Windows tucked into an alcove adds interest to the Great Room. A touch of color to the walls pulls the the rest of the room together. Custom cutouts allow for future cabinetry, at the homeowner's request.

#17 Wall of Windows - Enhancing Outdoor Living

SummerlynDeckwallofwindows

Another example of a curved Wall of Windows. Everyone enjoying the outdoor setting on the deck can feel connected to what's happening inside, with windows setting the tone for indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Great views don't just happen in one direction.

#18 Wall of Windows - 2 Story Cedar Wrapped Picture Windows

DinsmoreLivingwallofwindows

These huge picture windows make a bold statement - 2 stories high. Cedar framing is replicated on the fireplace and Kitchen, as part of the custom designed theme for this home. Stacked rock surround and solid oak hardwood flooring complete the room.

#19 Wall of Windows - Capturing Light through the Screen Porch

GlenviewB4GreatRoomwallofwindows

When Great Room windows have a Screen Porch on the other side, an 11 foot ceiling allows for more light to shine through, with transoms, like this Wall of Windows framing the fireplace. It also expands the open floor plan feel.

#20 Wall of Windows - Reflecting the Roofline

TreehouseExteriorRearwallofwindows

The massive Wall of Windows on this new home in NC emphasizes the roofline, with custom windows shaped to follow the architectural design. The walk-out basement beneath also emphasizes the appeal of natural light.

#22 Wall of Windows - Master Suite

DanielMasterwallofwindows

The Wall of Windows in this Master Suite provides a light and airy feel to the room. The double trey ceiling above extends that openness. Glass French Doors to the private deck and Screen Porch beyond add even more access to outdoors.

#22 Wall of Windows - Doors and Windows Everywhere

HorseCountry-EstateIsland

The Wall of Windows in the eating area beyond this Kitchen are brighter with transoms. And take a look at how glass doors and picture windows are heightened by curved windows above, for a formal look to the transition of indoor/outdoor living.

This Big Kitchen Island is framed with walnut cabinetry with a beautiful furniture finish, with easy access to storage from the Kitchen and Great Room.

The Kitchen Island sink with adjacent dishwasher access allows for easy interactions while taking care of tasks.

#2 Big Kitchen Island - Sous Chef

This Chef's Kitchen is designed for entertainment, with a Big Kitchen Island as the centerpiece. The stained furniture-style cabinetry allows for spacious storage under the Kitchen Island.

A veggie sink tucked into the corner provides convenience, backed by lots of space to spread out. A microwave is set under the Kitchen Island countertop.

#3 Big Kitchen Island - Bold Personality

This stunning granite countertop with gold and brown veins draws even more attention to this Big Kitchen Island. When you work with a custom home builder in NC, you can set your veggie sink wherever you want it - like this corner spot.

Tuck bar stools under the countertop, away from traffic flow.

#4 Big Kitchen Island - with a Little Kitchen Island

This estate home's Chef's Kitchen has a Big Kitchen Island - with a sink, dual level bar with seating and cabinetry, and a Little Kitchen Island, with a microwave tucked underneath.

The two Kitchen Islands are integral to the efficient Kitchen layout in the photo above, which was custom designed to be both aesthetic and functional.

#5 Big Kitchen Island - Ultimate Open Space

This custom designed Kitchen takes open space seriously, with a Big Kitchen Island artistically angled for more flow-through. Maple hardwood flooring and maple finish wood cabinetry set a light tone, topped by dark granite with light marbling.

Bar style seating at the back, cabinetry storage shelving on the front, and a full size sink set across from the microwave complete the layout.

#6 Big Kitchen Island - Old World Influence

This Big Kitchen Island designed with rich elegance including ornate legs and a custom shaped quartz countertop compliments this luxury Kitchen with its furniture finished premium cabinetry of wood and glass, stacked stone walls, mosaic tile over the range, beams overhead, and a color and texture blend throughout that makes this Kitchen Island stand out even more.

A seating bar and full size sink top the deep storage cabinets accessed from the front.

#7 Big Kitchen Island - Stretch Limo

A Big Kitchen Island can be tucked into a narrow kitchen by extending the length and tightening the width, for a practical result filled with purpose. This f10' long countertop is unencumbered with sinks or appliances, making it a very usable surface.

A short peninsula and built in shelving at the edges of the Kitchen add even more storage. The light color tones chosen from tile backsplash to countertop and cabinetry are set against a walnut stained floor.

#8 Big Kitchen Island - Classic Provincial

The formal intent of this Estate Home Kitchen is evident from the furniture-style pantry to the wood-look tile floor and the Big Kitchen Island. The blend of dark and light add classic appeal, from the listello accents in the tile backsplash to the stain and quartz choices.

Veggie sink at the end across from the full sink, stove and wall ovens gives triangular work space. Cabinetry all around provides a combination of drawers and cupboards.

#9 Big Kitchen Island - Open Floor Plan

This classic black and white Kitchen has a Big Kitchen Island as the centerpiece, with a wide open surface that sets the tone of the open floor plan. A seating bar at the back provides even more flexibility for this effective approach to big gatherings.

The white tile backsplash continues the theme of simplicity, with traditional premium cabinetry placements that can blend with any architectural decor choice.

#10 Big Kitchen Island - Strikingly Beautiful

GlenviewB7KitchenIsland

This Big Kitchen Island provides a huge surface to gather around for work and play. With the biggest granite top possible without a seam and tuck-under seating at the back the only thing better than its size is its beautiful black and white marbling.

This Kitchen is filled with light, from can lights overhead to under the cabinet lighting, a big window over the sink, and a wall of windows to the side.

Ask about availability to move in now to this gorgeous new home, the Glenview, in Pittsboro, NC. See below for more information.

#11 Big Kitchen Island - Grand Lodge

GrandLodgeIsland

This Big Kitchen Island looks like a movie set, with extravagant details throughout. Designed to be a focal point in this stunning estate home, it vies with one-of-a-kind features throughout the custom home. Wood beams overhead in the Kitchen provide stark contrast to the white coffered ceiling beyond.

The custom cut curved quartz countertop is embraced by carved wood footings and space for everyone to gather. Tile flooring replicating a wood grained effect ties multiple rooms together.

#12 Big Kitchen Island - Massive Matrix

HorseCountry-EstateIsland

This Big Kitchen Island is designed to be the most important piece of furniture in the room. With the biggest quartz surface possible, a veggie sink next to the microwave tucked under the countertop, and lots of storage, this Big Kitchen Island makes a bold statement for practicality.

Note the blend of light and dark premium cabinetry, and the generous big drawers for easy access to everything. This Big Kitchen Island is the center of attention in a wide open floor plan with beautiful features in every direction, across wood-look tile.

9 Big Kitchen Islands with Photos

North Carolina Custom Home Builder Tips and Trends

Big islands in the Kitchen are the number one request for new homes in NC for 2019. Lifestyles seem to center in the Kitchen, and big islands give everyone somewhere to be.

Here are 9 top trending big kitchen islands.

Click on photos to see the rest of each home.

#1 Big Kitchen Island - Center sink, central storage

This big island is framed with walnut cabinetry on two sides, for easy access to storage from both the kitchen and the great room.

The sink in the middle of the island allows for easy conversation with everyone else in the room while cooking and cleaning, with adjacent dishwasher access.

A beautiful furniture finish adds formality.

#2 Big Kitchen Island - Veggie sink, microwave under the island

In this chef's kitchen designed for entertainment, the huge kitchen island has a veggie sink tucked into the corner with lots of space to spread out.

There is spacious cabinetry under both sides of the island, and a microwave tucked under the countertop.

The kitchen island is the perfect center point for this well thought out layout.

#3 Big Kitchen Island - Bold personality with tuck under sitting

The ability to choose your own granite slab for your big island kitchen in your new custom home provides the opportunity to make the island even more of a focal point, like this artistic choice.

This big kitchen island has a veggie sink in the corner, for flexibility.

There is room enough under the island to tuck bar stools out of sight.

#4 Big Kitchen Island - Double islands with versatility

This upscale chef's kitchen has two islands, to separate work space and provide more versatility.

A typical sized island is in the foreground, with a microwave underneath.

A big kitchen island is to the rear, with two levels of surface, including a seating bar.

#5 Big Kitchen Island - Angled, for more open space

This custom designed kitchen has even more open space, with the big kitchen island angled to allow for more flow-through.

There is seating room at the back of the island, and huge storage shelving on one side.

The kitchen island has a full size sink in the island, with the microwave tucked into the cabinetry across from the sink.

#6 Big Kitchen Island - Custom designed, like the rest of the kitchen

This custom designed big island was created as part of an artistic architectural blend for a chef's kitchen accented with stone, tile, and furniture-finished premium cabinetry that includes glass doors.

There is seating on one side and a full size sink in the middle of the big island, for easy conversations and convenience.

This big kitchen island is within easy reach of double wall ovens, cooktop, and refrigerator.

#7 Big Kitchen Island - Long and narrow

Even when a narrow kitchen can have a big kitchen island - like this one, with six drawers, three double cabinets and a ten foot span.

When a big kitchen island is narrow and long, it works best to keep the surface open, like this one, with the sink across from it in the countertop.

The white and light tile backsplash, countertops, cabinetry and wall color make this kitchen feel even bigger.

#8 Big Kitchen Island - Furniture

This entire kitchen was created with the formality of furniture, with a big kitchen island as the center of activity.

The big kitchen island has a veggie sink to one side, across from a full sink in the countertop.

There is cabinetry underneath the front and back of the island, with a combination of drawers and cupboards.

A tile floor and listello accents in the tile backsplash add personality.

#9 Big Kitchen Island - Seating Bar with easy access to the Great Room

This classic black and white kitchen island offers a clean, open surface for cooking preparations as well as gatherings that often center around the island.

Seating at the back provides even more flexibility for this simple and effective big island solution.

Flow through from the Great Room is easy, with this open floor plan.

19 Top Trey Ceiling Styles for New Homes

Posted by Penny Hull on Tue, Nov 29, 2016 @ 15:11 PM

Photos of 19 Trey Ceiling Designs

Chatham County NC New Home Trends

Trey ceilings are one of the most popular additions to Chatham County new custom homes. Get ideas for your new home design, with these photos of octagonal, box, step, and double step trey ceilings. Click any photo to see the full photo gallery for that home!

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Where are Trey Ceilings placed within a home? While Trey Ceilings can be placed in nearly any room of the home - from the kitchen to the great room - they are most often placed in master bedrooms and formal dining rooms.

What are some of the most popular Trey Ceiling styles? Step, shallow step, vaulted, octagonal, angled, or single box are some popular trey ceiling designs.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

This Chapel Hill new home has rounded corners - designed to mirror the archways below.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Deep browns contrast against the white painted wainscoting in this formal dining room - complete with an octagonal trey ceiling.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Double trey ceilings are more popular in the master bedroom. These trey ceilings carry the wall colors into the ceiling, to emphasize the layering look.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

The ultimate master retreat is topped with this owner's suite trey ceiling that emphasizes the grand dimension of this spacious personal space. The choice to bathe the room in earthtones and white is the perfect color palette for this setting.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

The layers in this trey ceiling are taller, emphasizing the raised height ceiling. How many ceilings are painted white versus the wall color? We've found that white ceilings are slightly more popular - although lots of Chapel Hill new home buyers request painted ceilings as well.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

The deep, white trey design selected for this master suite creates a crowning effect of sophistication. Grey walls reflect the latest color trend, while directing the eye upward.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

This master bedroom white trey ceiling has two layers with crown molding. The sitting area tucked in at the back of the room has its own little niche, behind the trey.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Here's another approach to a multi-layer trey ceiling, in this master suite that's bold with personality. Bright yellow and white layers make the room sunny and bright, while emphasizing the design's intricate tiers.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Flirtatious romance can be created with multiple layers in the trey ceiling, like this master suite retreat. Your color palette will reflect the tone you want to reflect, whether you tend toward whimsy, daring or conventional.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

The classic look to this formal dining room trey ceiling reflects the elegance of the room, with a welcoming openness and simplistic design that compliments expansive windows, archways, chair rail, and hardwoods.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Frame your formal dining room with a vertical trey ceiling like this to provide balance with your favorite wainscoting design. Color adds dimension, while white adds formality.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Create character in your kitchen, with a trey ceiling that goes over the space where you spend most of your time. This example is clean and crisp, with a simple box appeal that serves as an extension of the show stopper chef's kitchen.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Keep it simple, with a basic trey ceiling with accent color for just a touch of formality. This effect is popular with more casual lifestyles, where rigid formality feels out of place.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

This angled trey ceiling makes a formal dining statement as a warm welcome to every sit down meal. Serving as a tie-together with incredibly detailed trim work, strategically placed windows and an art niche, this trey reflects the ceiling appeal of custom homes.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Give your dining room an incredible designer appeal, with a multi-layered octagonal trey ceiling accented by bands of color.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

When the emphasis is on all the archways, you might want to opt for an all-white octagonal trey in the formal dining room. This provides the expected formality, while keeping most of the attention elsewhere.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

Simple and sweet, this master suite with trey ceiling has a soft, warm feeling, with a sitting alcove that beckons just beyond.

Trey Ceiling Photos | Chapel Hill New Homes

When you enter your dining room through the wide swoop of this dramatic arched entry, the bold red and white of this traditional dining room reflects confidence. When there's that much going on in the rest of the room, use your trey ceiling as a punctuation mark, like this.

Two Car versus Three Car Garages - What's Trending in Chapel Hill? | 2016 Parade of Homes

Posted by Penny Hull on Fri, Oct 07, 2016 @ 11:10 AM

Triangle Parade of Homes 2016 Trends:

What's the latest trend for new homes with one, two, three, and four car garages?  Does a home ever not have a garage?

The Orange Chatham Durham County Parade of Homes can be a great trend indicator of the demand for the number of cars for the garage. We've analyzed the 2016 Tour data, and here's what we found:

Two Car versus Three Car Garages | 2016 Parade of Homes Chapel Hill

What's Going on with New Homes in the Chapel Hill area?  Number of Cars in the Garage

Two car garages were the most popular layout selected by home builders for entries available for viewing during the Triangle Parade of Homes in Chatham County.

1. Two Car Garages - 50% of Parade of Homes Entries in Orange County

  • 7 homes included a 2 car garage.  This is the most common garage layout.  Some are side facing, and some are front facing.

2. Three Car Garages - 36% of Parade of Homes Entries in Orange County

  • 5 homes included a 3 car garage.
  • A 3 Car Garage has all three garage bays connected in a single row.

3. Split Three Car Garages - 14% of Parade of Homes Entries in Orange County

  • 2 homes included a split 3 car garage.
  • A split 3 Car Garage has one bay on one side and double bay on the other side, at right angles to each other.
  • An appropriately designed split garage will allow access into both areas from the home.  This can be accomplished either by including enough area inside the garage or by including an access door from the home directly into each portion of the garage.  There are a few builders that do not create any access into the third bay, which can make it inconvenient to use.

Two Car versus Three Car Garages | 2016 Parade of Homes Chapel Hill

4. One Car Garages - 0% of Parade of Homes Entries in Chatham County

  • Again, a one car garage is more common in townhomes.  No homes in Orange County were featured in the Parade with a one car garage.

5. Zero Car Garages - 0% of Parade of Homes Entries in Chatham County

  • This is more common in townhomes than in single family homes.  No townhomes were submitted in the 2016 Parade of Homes, in Orange County, though there were entries in other counties.

Fourteen homes were submitted by new home builders as entries in Orange County in the Durham Orange Chatham Parade of Homes 2016, out of 65 total entries.  Seven of these new homes are in Hillsborough, five in Chapel Hill, one in Durham (Orange County address), and one in Mebane.

What does this mean for homebuyers in Orange County?

Parade of Homes entries generally represent what builders believe homebuyers are looking for today.  What size of garage are YOU looking for?

8 Top Window Bench Ideas

Chapel Hill Custom Homes

Window benches should save space in your new home, not eat it up.

Built-in benches provide extra seating, and can be used to store bulky items such as throw blankets and pillows.

See photos of Chapel Hill custom homes with built-in window benches - some with "secret" storage hidden below and other designed as casual seating spaces.

Built in window bench idea #1: Sunroom window bench with storage

This storage bench is tucked to one end of the sunroom. It is small, discrete, and adds a large amount of stoarge to the surrounding areas.

Built in window bench idea #2: Breakfast room wrap-around bench

A bench wraps around two walls in this breakfast room, just around the corner from the sunroom.

You could add a table, and use the bench as seating. Or you could use a smaller table in the center of the room, with separate perimeter seating.

The fronts of these benches are built with a beadboard design and accent trim, to achieve a more upscale feel beside the executive kitchen.

Built in window bench idea #4: Media room with bench wall

These storage benches open from the front, rather than top, and are designed for kids to use in this media room / play room combination space.

Side-opening benches can be a great alternative to top-opening benches, depending on how you wish to use the space.

Built in window bench idea #5: Oak bench

If you love the idea of a bench seating area, but don't think you'll need the storage, consider built in bench options like these:

In this Chapel Hill custom home, the full-length window bench in the bonus room has an oak seat.
