This Chapel Hill new home master closet is approximately 8' x 8'

What is the average walk in closet size for Raleigh new homes?

The standard width of a walk in closet can range from 5' to 12'. This is important because the minimum 5' width maintains a 3' hallway into the closet, even after you hang clothing along the walls.

The standard depth of a walk in closet can range from 5' (for a square room) to 17' (for a bonus-room-style closet).

If the average walk in closet size starts at a 5'x5' space, how large is this master closet?

What is the distance between clothing rods in a walk in closet?

Double rods are typically placed at 40 and 80 inches from the floor. Rods designed for tall garments are typically placed at least 72 inches from the floor.

This Raleigh new home master closet is about 14.5' x 11.5' (with a square center island cabinet).

When does a walk in closet need a window?

Floor plans with a window inside the master closet are typically arranged in a Bedroom --> Bathroom --> Closet layout. Here is an example floor plan:

The window wall shelving was extended outwards to create more storage space and a separate "his and hers" layout. The walk in closet is about 14' x 9'.

Although windows are not necessary for closets, they can be added by a custom home builder to keep balance and visual appeal on the exterior of the home -  especially when the closet is located on the front face of the home.

Walk in closets can leave plenty of space to add a wall mirror or door mirror. Here are some examples:

Pocket Office, Drop Zone, and More - This Floor Plan Hits All the Hot Spots | Raleigh New Homes

Posted by Penny Hull on Thu, Oct 15, 2015 @ 09:10 AM

It's tough to find a floor plan that hits everything on the wish list!  We're highlighting some designs that have done a great job making everything work, without unnecessarily supersizing your new home.   The "Poplar Place" is a Frank Betz home plan with 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom floor plan with just over 2,500 sq ft of heated living space (the two car garage can be designed as front entry or side entry).

Popular Floor Plan Features:

The Poplar Place includes many of the most requested floor plan features in a Raleigh new home, including:

  • An open, spacious Kitchen with a large island and seating
  • A first floor Pocket Office in addition to the first floor Guest Room
  • An oversized first floor Guest Bedroom with walk in closet, in place of the smaller bedroom with standard size closet
  • A drop zone and Mudroom, instead of a garage door that opens straight into the Dining area
  • His and hers closets with separate access
  • Separated his and hers vanities
  • More flexibility on the second floor: Bedroom 3 can also be converted into a very large open Loft or enclosed Game Room
  • Attic storage on the second floor

How to Modify this Custom Home Floor Plan:

When working with an experienced custom home builder, here are a few examples of custom modifications that can be made to the Poplar Place:

Floor Plan Modification #1: Delete the Jack and Jill Bath Portion of "Bedroom 2"

Removing a portion of the Jack and Jill bath allows you to extend the Laundry Room and include a long Folding Counter or other built-in storage options.  The bath is still extremely workable for multiple children with the tub/shower split and the dual vanity option.

Floor Plan Modification #2: Add a Loft

The layout of this Raleigh floor plan allows you to convert either Bedroom 3 or Bedroom 4 to an Open Loft, unless five bedrooms are desired.

Raleigh New Home Floor Plan Modifications

Floor Plan Modification #3: Add a Walk Up Third Floor

Based on the existing layout, a custom home builder can move the entrace to Bedroom 4 and wrap the staircase into a third floor to create additional, cost-effective square footage.   The roofline will be modified with this version.

How to (Re) Design Your Master Bath

Great design ideas for spa bathrooms and master bathrooms with efficient layout with soaking tub, tile shower, single vanity with open shelf storage, and separate toilet room.

The Carwiles came to Stanton Homes with a traditional-style floor plan and some questions about how it could be modified to meet their needs. They loved the romance of a traditionally styled home, and they had some modern thinking that led to some savvy improvements on the livability of their original floorplan.

Top on their wish list were master bath layout modifications.

A Master Bath that Just Didn't Work:

The Carwiles simply didn't care for the existing master bath layout, with the tub and tub window facing the front of the home.

Stanton Homes redesigned the Master Bathroom for the Carwiles without increasing the overall square footage of the home.  Instead, we created more floor place and visual appeal by adding a cantilever (an alcove with no foundation underneath) on the side of the home for the garden tub.

Privacy that Protects the Exterior Feel of the Home

The water closet (a separate room for the toilet) was moved to the front of the house and incorporated the front window.

The result is that simply closing the door to the water closet, the bathroom has complete privacy from the front yard, without having to keep window coverings permanently closed.

His and Hers Bathroom Vanity Photos

The original layout out a single, basic countertop with two sinks.

In the redesigned layout, the double vanity became longer, making room for a "his and her" style master bathroom with center open shelving unit.

We started with concept renderings drawn by Stanton Homes interior design experts. The open shelves are designed for hand towels and toiletries; the 24" wide stack of drawers located below the open shelves are designed for bath towels

The his and hers vanity areas also include separate drawers for housing personal items - lending this master bathroom plenty of storage space.

Add Tile, Fixture, and Color Selections to Pull it All Together with Expert Help

Adding to the charm, the bathroom was decorated in a classic hotel-look with the timeless contrast of white subway tile and white Carrara marble accents in the shower and on the floor, in combination with dark stained raised panel cabinets.

Traditional pale blue walls complete the desired vintage look.

All the Carwiles need to add are inexpensive Bamboo blinds and stacks of fresh white towels to complete the statement.

The Carwile - Floor Plan Without Modifications

Bathroom Design Photos | Raleigh NC New HomesHere is the original Raleigh floor plan, before custom modifications were made to meet the needs of the homeowner:

 - Tub located on front wall, with window above

 - Water closet located on side wall, with half-wall barrier

 - Vanity reaches from master closet, with no space for open cabinetry

The Carwile - Floor Plan Transformation

Bathroom Design Photos | Raleigh NC New Homes
Here is the modified Carwile floor plan, after custom modifications were made to meet the needs of the homeowner:

 - Tub has been moved to side wall, with a cantilever design

 - Water closet has been moved to the front wall, with privacy door

 - The double vanity has been elongated

 - Built-in open shelves have been added between the "his-and-hers" vanities
