What living areas matter most to Chatham County Home Builders presenting in the Triangle Parade of Homes 2016?

We've got the scoop on trends in "Living Areas" (other than the Family Room or Great Room, which is considered the Main Living Area).  Here's what we found, looking at Chatham Parade Home data:

  • 9 of 30, or 30% of Chatham County entries, had a Loft in the 2016 Parade of Homes
  • A Loft is an area that's not enclosed, and often contains multiple traffic patterns or doors to various rooms.
  • A Loft can offer an additional living area, or a kids study area, on the second floor.

2. Bonus Room or Game Room - 47% of Parade of Homes Entries by Chatham County Home Builders

  • 14 of 30, or 47% of Chatham County entries, had a Bonus Room or Game Room in the 2016 Parade of Homes
  • Bonus or Game Rooms can be found on the second floor. These rooms:
  • Offer additional "living space" that is often enclosed, or that has a single point of entry and/or multiple long walls and a fairly separated area.
  • Are great places for kids to play, or for secondary activities like a tv room that's separated from the main living area.
  • Can be placed above the garage to maximize cost-effective square footage.

Here's a photo from a Stanton Home in the Triangle with a large bonus room upstairs:

3. Sun Room - 7% of Parade of Homes Entries by Chatham County Home Builders

  • 2 of 30, or 7% of Chatham County entries, had a Sun Room in the 2016 Parade of Homes.
  • A Sun Room often is an extension of the rear of the home, or placed on a rear corner of the home.
  • A Sun Room usually has at least two exterior walls, and many more windows than a typical room.
  • In North Carolina's balmy climate, homebuyers often opt to include a Screen Porch instead of a Sun Room, but though rare, they can be found!

This contemporary sun room has windows on all four walls, from a Stanton Home in the Triangle:

4. Keeping Room - 13% of Parade of Homes Entries by Chatham County Home Builders

  • 2 of 30, or 7% of Chatham County entries, had a Sun Room in the 2016 Parade of Homes.
  • A Keeping Room is generally a smaller version of the Great Room.  Unlike a Formal Living Room, which is usually right next to the front entrance so that "formal" guests do not venture far into the home, the Keeping Room is typically at the rear of the home, usually adjacent to the Kitchen.
  • A Keeping Room is often an extension off the first floor, and a Vaulted Ceiling can sometimes be included in this room.
  • A Morning Room is generally a full-size room off the Kitchen, larger than a Breakfast Room.

Here's an example of a keeping room inside Stanton Homes in the Triangle. This keeping room is open to the kitchen, with a high vaulted ceiling:
